About this project

Living apart together VDS

About this project

Two houses, for the parents and their daughter respectively, are arranged around a central patio, forming a creative exercise within a traditional building envelope. The two dwellings are visually unified by an expressive roofline, perceived as one coherent whole.

This project responds to the contemporary issue of an aging population. It proposes a more compact and socially connected way of living, even in a rural setting, allowing younger generations to support the elderly while maintaining the necessary independence. Each unit has its own terrace, kitchen, and bathroom, ensuring privacy and comfort.

By pooling resources, the result becomes greater than the sum of its parts. The shared outdoor space — the patio, directly accessible from each living area — serves as a meeting place where grandchildren can play and the entire family can enjoy Sunday lunch together. From an energy perspective, the construction also offers significant advantages. A single heat pump with a capture field beneath the lawn provides heating for both homes. Combined with ecological solutions such as cellulose insulation in the roof structure and durable European softwood for the exterior joinery, the project offers a solid answer to today’s demand for sustainable building.

The interplay between natural, rural materials (slate, brick, wood) and a contemporary architectural language allows this project to reinterpret tradition within a modern context.
