When the clients’ grandmother visited for the first time, she said with genuine conviction: “But that’s beautiful!” The most meaningful compliment an architect can receive, and at the same time: “Mission accomplished.” The house had to be contemporary yet appealing to both young and old, regardless of personal taste. Architecture is more than attractive images on a screen. It succeeds when a visitor or resident feels wonder through light, materiality, spatial quality, atmosphere, the balance between openness and intimacy, and the relationship between inside and outside.
The house faces south and accommodates a large program on a compact footprint within a narrow plot. The compact volume is surrounded on three sides by a canopy, which forms a loggia with the colonnade on the southern façade. On the east side, the canopy creates a covered entrance with a carport, while on the north side it becomes a bay window. The colonnade and canopy on the glazed southern façade act as sunshades.
The house embodies a symbiosis of modernity, craftsmanship, and authenticity.
