Showrooms of car dealerships often look alike: steel boxes with lots of glass. In exploring garages of the past, we discovered the Ford Garage in Zottegem by architect Lippens. The Art Deco–inspired building was a graceful landmark. Garage Van Lierde, located along the main road, must both fit within the urban ribbon and subtly stand out. The obligatory glass façade displays the most polished car bodies while simultaneously reflecting the surrounding streetscape. The showroom, built in brick and glass, is a three-dimensional sculpted volume with a subtle and understated nod to the Ford Garage.
